Spree July 2011

If you were in Shobrooke Park over the weekend of 16th and 17th July you might have noticed the tent village on the far side of the lake.
Over three hundred and fifty children aged from eight to fourteen had come, with their church youth group leaders, to join in this fun weekend to learn how Jesus loves them today, tomorrow and forever.
Spree camps like this are held all over the country at this time of year. Organised by “Urban Saints” (better known to some of us by their old name of Crusaders) in conjunction with South West Youth Ministries (SWYM). “Spree” gives church youth groups the opportunity to spend a weekend together with other similar groups. The place was a buzz of activity.
Archery, clay pigeon shooting, kayaking, drumming, bouncy castles, football, volleyball, break dancing, circus skills were all available.
Quieter activities included a range of crafts or a visit to the prayer tent. During the day they were grouped by age and interest for some more formal teaching. Other group activities included a five-a-side soccer tournament, “It’s a Knock Out” and “Spree’s Got Talent”.
The persistent showers failed to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. We are assured that most children spent part of each night sleeping but by Sunday afternoon most of the adults also looked in need of a warm dry bed!
This is the first time the South West Spree has been held here. We need to thank Urban Saints and SWYM for organizing and running a first class event and we hope to welcome them back again next year.
