The Laurel Walk
This walk with its solid bank of laurel,
known as laurel lawn, was hugely overgrown.
The laurel was so tall that it
overhang to meet in the middle making this a dark and damp walk.
We cut it back very severely and let it re-grow.
In the nineteen thirties it was the Head Gardener’s task to trim the Laurel Lawn, each plant was pruned individually and
it
took him, with the garden boy tidying up behind him, the best part of a month each year.
We now trim it once a year with a long mechanical hedge trimmer!
Do not miss the path leading off this
main walk part way along on the west side to take you round above the Fountain
to the Rose Garden.
The view over the Fountain and the Sundial Terrace to the Shell Folly at the top of the Park was
clearly planned as a focal point of the garden.
