4. The Rose Garden.

The site was designed to be a rose garden, but had been neglected for many years.
Until 1996 the whole area was surrounded by a thirty-foot high Irish yew hedge.
This garden was designed by Colin Tabuteau-Harrison.

It was constructed and planted in the Autumn in 1996.
All the roses are old varieties that could have been in the original rose garden.
Unfortunatly the hedges caught box blight and had to be removed.
The roses grew old and could not be repaced due to 'Rose replant disease'
So the rose garden is now closed for repairs.
A new design is needed as roses no longer want to live in this ground.
